With major funding stimulating Smart Grid development in countries like China, Japan, Australia, Singapore and South Korea, Asia Pacific as begun to move rapidly toward the point of large-scale Smart Grid implementation. Some of the world’s largest utilities, like the State Grid Corporation of China, are using their economies of scale to quickly ramp up, launching demo projects that link together intelligent grid technology, smart meters and broadband. However, challenges exist with regard to green house gas emission reduction, and vast differences between urban and rural communities in the same countries mean that a universal Smart Grid architecture will be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to apply. There is a great deal that can be learned from this region as some of the most densely populated countries in the world tackle the shared challenges of Smart Grid implementation.
