Great steps are being made in the Americas in the Smart Grid arena. Particularly in the United States, we see significant progress and advancements in Smart Grid deployment. With government support coming from the Energy Independence and Security Act, the Department of Energy, and American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and over $9 billion in grants and private funding currently spent on projects, the U.S. has a number of notable programs underway. However, barriers such as a lack of national energy policy and limited funding for R&D still cause significant challenges. In Latin America, Brazil is leading the way as the World Cup and Olympic game events drive further clean tech investments, and some utilities are beginning to launch pilot projects. With so much forward motion in R&D and piloting, the future rests heavily on policy and regulation, standards development, interoperability solutions and consumer acceptance.
